Description

This rich and velvety Chocolate Sweet Potato Pie combines the creamy sweetness of mashed sweet potatoes with decadent chocolate, warm spices, and a buttery pre-made crust. Baked to perfection and chilled overnight, this dessert offers a luscious texture and a perfect balance of flavors ideal for holiday gatherings or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 9 inch pre-made pie crust

Filling

  • 3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 3 large eggs (room temp)
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the sweet potatoes and later the pie.
  2. Bake Sweet Potatoes: Using a fork, poke the sweet potatoes several times to allow steam to escape and bake them directly on the oven rack for 40 minutes or until they become tender.
  3. Cool and Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Allow the sweet potatoes to cool enough to handle. Peel off the skin and remove any dark spots to ensure smooth and bright filling.
  4. Mix Filling: In a stand mixer, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, melted butter, eggs, light brown sugar, sugar, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, kosher salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, grated orange zest, and vanilla extract. Beat the mixture until it is fully combined and smooth.
  5. Add Chocolate: Stir in 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream into the sweet potato mixture to create a rich chocolate-infused filling.
  6. Fill Pie Crust: Pour the prepared filling evenly into the pre-made 9-inch pie crust, smoothing the top as needed.
  7. Bake the Pie: Bake the pie in the preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 minutes or until the filling is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  8. Cool the Pie: Remove the pie from the oven and transfer it to a cooling rack. Let it cool down to room temperature completely.
  9. Chill Overnight: After cooling, cover the pie and place it into the refrigerator to chill overnight. This step helps the pie to set fully and enhances the flavors.

Notes

  • Ensure sweet potatoes are baked until very tender for a smooth filling texture.
  • Room temperature eggs help the filling combine better.
  • Chilling the pie overnight improves the texture and flavor depth.
  • Use a toothpick to check doneness in the center during baking; it should come out mostly clean.
  • For extra presentation, garnish with mini chocolate chips just before serving.
