Description

A comforting and creamy dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes baked in a rich garlic-infused cream sauce and layered with melted cheddar and parmesan cheeses, perfect as a hearty side for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes

Cheese

  • 2 cups freshly grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese

Sauce

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature for slow and even baking.
  2. Prepare Potatoes: Peel the potatoes and slice them very thinly—about 1/8 inch thick—using a mandoline or a sharp knife to ensure even cooking and layering.
  3. Make Cream Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Add the heavy cream along with salt and pepper to taste, warming gently without boiling to combine flavors.
  4. Assemble Layers: Grease a baking dish and layer half of the potato slices, pour half the cream sauce evenly over them, then sprinkle half of the cheddar and parmesan cheeses. Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, cream sauce, and cheeses.
  5. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes to soften the potatoes and meld the flavors.
  6. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 25-35 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly on top.
  7. Rest and Serve: Allow the scalloped potatoes to rest for 5-10 minutes after baking to set and cool slightly for easier serving.

Notes

  • Using Yukon Gold potatoes will add a buttery flavor, but Russet potatoes are ideal for their texture and starch content.
  • Slicing the potatoes thinly ensures they cook evenly and absorb the cream sauce well.
  • Do not boil the cream mixture to prevent curdling and preserve the creamy texture.
  • Letting the dish rest after baking helps the sauce thicken and improves the overall texture.
  • For a lighter version, you can substitute half-and-half for the heavy cream, but the dish will be less rich.
