Description

This Hibachi Steak recipe features tender sirloin or NY strip steak cooked to perfection with a medley of sautéed vegetables including mushrooms, onions, and zucchini. The dish is finished with a savory soy sauce glaze enhanced by garlic, butter, and a touch of honey, creating an authentic and flavorful Japanese-inspired meal that’s quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak

  • 1 pound sirloin or NY strip steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Vegetables

  • 8 ounces white mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch sticks

Sauce and Aromatics

  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey

Garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Season and Cook Steak: Season the bite-sized steak pieces generously with salt and pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Sear the steak pieces for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until they develop a nice brown crust. Remove the cooked steak from the pan and set aside.
  2. Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil along with 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Add the sliced mushrooms and onions, sautéing them for 4 to 5 minutes until they soften and become fragrant.
  3. Add and Cook Zucchini: Add the zucchini sticks to the pan with the mushrooms and onions. Continue cooking for another 2 to 3 minutes until the zucchini is tender but still crisp.
  4. Sauté Garlic in Butter: Push the vegetables to one side of the pan. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter on the empty side, then add the minced garlic. Sauté the garlic until fragrant, being careful not to burn it, about 1 minute.
  5. Prepare and Add Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and honey. Pour this sauce mixture into the pan with the vegetables and garlic. Stir to coat everything evenly.
  6. Combine Steak and Simmer: Return the cooked steak pieces back to the pan, toss everything together, and let it simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  7. Finish and Garnish: Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in the pan, mix it through the steak and vegetables for added richness. Garnish the finished hibachi steak with sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.
