Ingredients
Scale
Spinach Dip Filling
- 1 bag frozen chopped spinach (10 oz) – thawed and squeezed dry
- 1 block cream cheese (8 oz) – softened
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Pastry and Finishing
- 1 sheet puff pastry – thawed but cold
- 1 egg (for brushing)
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the softened cream cheese, grated Parmesan, mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and the thawed, well-drained spinach. Mix until the mixture is smooth and evenly blended.
- Roll out the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll the thawed puff pastry into a rectangular shape. Spread the prepared spinach mixture evenly across the pastry surface, leaving one long edge free of filling to help with sealing.
- Form the log and chill: Starting from the edge with filling, tightly roll the puff pastry into a log shape. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to chill for 30 minutes, which will help the roll hold together during slicing and baking.
- Preheat oven and slice: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Remove the chilled log from the refrigerator and slice it into half-inch thick rounds. Arrange these pinwheels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spaced slightly apart.
- Brush and bake: Beat the egg and brush it over the top of each pinwheel to give them a golden, glossy finish. Bake the pinwheels in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are puffed up and golden brown.
Notes
- Make sure to squeeze out as much moisture as possible from the thawed spinach to prevent soggy pastry.
- Chilling the rolled pastry log before slicing helps maintain the shape and prevents the filling from spilling out during baking.
- The garlic powder and onion powder can be adjusted to taste or replaced with fresh minced garlic and onion if preferred.
- If puff pastry is not available, phyllo dough could be used but will alter the texture.
- Serve these pinwheels warm for the best flavor and texture but they can also be served at room temperature.
