Description

These Spinach Dip in Bite-Sized Pinwheels offer a delicious and creative way to enjoy a classic creamy spinach dip wrapped inside crispy, golden puff pastry. Perfect as a party appetizer or snack, these pinwheels combine creamy cheeses and seasoned spinach inside flaky, oven-baked pastry rounds.

Ingredients

Scale

Spinach Dip Filling

  • 1 bag frozen chopped spinach (10 oz) – thawed and squeezed dry
  • 1 block cream cheese (8 oz) – softened
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Pastry and Finishing

  • 1 sheet puff pastry – thawed but cold
  • 1 egg (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the softened cream cheese, grated Parmesan, mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and the thawed, well-drained spinach. Mix until the mixture is smooth and evenly blended.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll the thawed puff pastry into a rectangular shape. Spread the prepared spinach mixture evenly across the pastry surface, leaving one long edge free of filling to help with sealing.
  3. Form the log and chill: Starting from the edge with filling, tightly roll the puff pastry into a log shape. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to chill for 30 minutes, which will help the roll hold together during slicing and baking.
  4. Preheat oven and slice: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Remove the chilled log from the refrigerator and slice it into half-inch thick rounds. Arrange these pinwheels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spaced slightly apart.
  5. Brush and bake: Beat the egg and brush it over the top of each pinwheel to give them a golden, glossy finish. Bake the pinwheels in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are puffed up and golden brown.

Notes

  • Make sure to squeeze out as much moisture as possible from the thawed spinach to prevent soggy pastry.
  • Chilling the rolled pastry log before slicing helps maintain the shape and prevents the filling from spilling out during baking.
  • The garlic powder and onion powder can be adjusted to taste or replaced with fresh minced garlic and onion if preferred.
  • If puff pastry is not available, phyllo dough could be used but will alter the texture.
  • Serve these pinwheels warm for the best flavor and texture but they can also be served at room temperature.
